Under general direction, the PEGA Lead System Architect (LSA) is responsible for architecting and designing business applications using Pega PRPC and other Pega frameworks and out of the box (OOB) features.  This position plays a significant role in ensuring that the application quality and design is of the highest quality standards and not only meets the needs of the business today but also supports future expansion for new features down the road.  The PEGA LSA is considered a technical leader and is responsible for the design, architecture, and implementation of PRPC based solutions, including the enterprise class structure and the basic design of the application.  This role is responsible and accountable for ensuring the business and technical architecture of the delivered solution matches customer technical and functional requirements.  This position communicates with the COE and Architecture team as well as Product teams, IT Delivery Services, Plan Customers, and other departments across NASCO.


Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates and facilitates the technical aspects of the solution by providing technical leadership and input during design and implementation of PRPC based solutions.
  • Leads the technical team in DCO sessions while gathering and understanding requirements, and developing and testing use cases to help ensure best possible application design.
  • Acts as the primary contact and authority for the technical architecture and solutions including enterprise class structure, data models and application framework.
  • Designs the technical solution and leads the technical team in development activities while ensuring adherence to the COE standards and best practices.
  • Educates NASCO and Plan resources about Pega solutions and capabilities, and, when appropriate, mentors and coaches NASCO, Partner and Plan architecture resources.
  • Performs code reviews and reviews alert logs to ensure application quality is in compliance with COE coding standards, UI/UX standards and Corporate Security standards.
  • Drives activities involved in scope definition, requirements analysis, functional and technical design, application build, product configuration, unit testing, UAT and production deployment.
  • Validates final delivered solutions meet and perform to technical and functional requirements.
  • Provides technical expertise and ownership in the diagnosis and resolution of issues, including the determination and provision of workaround solution or escalation to Pega support.
  • Stays current on PRPC Architecture, PRPC design and implementation features, and features/functionality when newer versions are released in order to best serve as a Subject Matter Expert to NASCO, the Plans, and Partners and pro-actively respond to ad-hoc questions.
  • Collaborates with NASCO, Partner, Plan and Pega team members to ensure NASCO and Plans are successful by effectively managing and delivering in different work environments and by understanding differences in dynamics, timing and nuances.
  • Demonstrates a solid understanding of reuse and portability in terms of enterprise solutions seeking to determine and develop repeatable, efficient and optimal ways of implementing Pega applications.
  • Provides thought leadership to NASCO, Plan and Partner team members, crossing business and technical project dimensions and solving complex business requirements and demonstrates forward-thinking considering where NASCO is going and how Pegasystems technology can support these efforts.
  • Makes recommendations of when to integrate with other products versus using PRPC for end to end solution and presents the best architecture to meet desired business needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Identifies project technical risks, and provide mitigation strategies.
  • Presents architectural decisions and recommendations to senior management


Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Experience:


  • Knowledge of Healthcare client business processes, best practices, & policies.
  • Experience leading projects using either Agile or Smart BPM methodologies.
  • Expertise in a variety of technologies, including, but not limited to, WebSphere or Weblogic, J2EE (JSP, Servlets, EJB, XML, Java), Oracle, DB2, and MS/SQL.
  • Strong Object Oriented Design / Development experience.
  • Knowledge of the software development lifecycle including design, configuration, testing, debugging, implementation, and support of large-scale, business-centric and process-based applications.
  • Demonstrated technical team leadership of enterprise wide application development
  • Ability to mentorship and lead junior members of team
  • Professional communication skills.
  • Ability to make effective decisions backed by research
  • Ability to explain the “why” or reasoning behind proposed solutions and articulate several options, the pro’s and con’s for each, and ultimately a recommended approach
  • Minimum of 8 years of Pega PRPC, Healthcare applications (CPM-HC, Claims Workstation, Appeals and grievance) development experience.
  • LSA certified  with at least 3 years PRPC technical leadership experience on large scale projects

Desired Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Experience:

  • Healthcare insurance industry domain expertise.
  • Prior consulting or client service delivery experience is a plus.


Required Training and Education:

  1. BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible experience or Masters with 6 years of experience in building and implementing model-driven, enterprise-level business solutions.
  2. PRPC Certifications: Certified Lead System Architect (CLSA) (required for internal and external applicants before start date)

• Collaborate closely with other highly skilled Pega resources and employees.
• Be a champion of Pega’s technology and its value to the customer.
• Develop foundational enhancements to existing Pega applications.
• Design and implement new Pega applications and prototypes.
• Establish standards and best practices for a Pega Center of Excellence (CoE).
• Mentor and support junior-level employees to cultivate and sustain Pega expertise for the customer and within the company.
• Integrate Pega applications with external APIs, web services and legacy data sources.
• Estimate implementation level of effort based upon requirements and design.
