Overview

Under general supervision, the Security Operations Analyst I  will be responsible for assisting more senior Security Operations Analysts with the analyzing, monitoring, tracking and reporting of behavior/tasks logged by assets (i.e., applications, systems, networks) in the form of incidents to ensure NASCO is protected from any potential malicious activities, either from internal information leaving the environment for malicious intent or for external threats attempting to penetrate the NASCO technical environment. This role will perform routine actions of analyzing correlated event logs to help identify normal versus malicious activity.  This role is responsible to assisting in monitoring cyber security and information technology infrastructure, including hardware, software, networks, applications and services.  This position will communicate primarily with Information Security, though may have contact with Application Development, Enterprise Risk Management and other appropriate areas, as deemed necessary. This position will communicate status to manager on projects and initiatives.

Responsibilities

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in monitoring network devices, applications, web traffic, and databases in order to determine if these assets have any vulnerability to potential internal or external threats.
  • Assists more senior resources in analyzing and assessing security incidents that occur to NASCO and escalates incidents by following established incident response plans.
  • Provides assistance to more senior level resources regarding risk and security assessments of applications, databases, and servers and supports networking technologies, such as routers, switches, access points, in order to determine if these assets have any security threats. 
  • Follows Information Security process, policies and procedures congruent with standards and industry best practices.
  • Assists in monitoring activities and events in NASCO’s Technology environment to ensure that anomalous behavior is detected, identified, classified and acted upon where appropriate.
  • Assists with application scanning to ensure that code releases are secure.
  • Develops corrective action and remediation plans when issues are identified in order to mitigate the risk of exploitation and assists with execution.
  • Seeks development opportunities to maintain a broad knowledge of current and emerging network security threats
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Experience:

  • Working knowledge about security issues, vulnerabilities, exploits, regulatory and legal changes, and security standards that may impact information security
  • Working knowledge and understanding of multiple operating systems and commands (i.e., Unix, ACF2, RACF, Linux, Windows, Cisco IOS) as well as an understanding of IT security and network best practices and software/hardware solutions
  • Working knowledge of business, application, information and enterprise architecture responsibilities, principles and standards.
  • Working knowledge of database structures and queries.
  • Ability to operate under deadlines and manage fluctuating workloads
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to tailor technical communication to the level of the organization being addressed. Strong technical aptitude
  • Self-starter with a strong work ethic who is willing to learn and grow in the information security industry
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and recommend/negotiate solutions
  • 1 to 3 years experience in a security operations center and/or system administration role or in a technical role

 

Required Training and Education:

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Network Security Engineering or related major or equivalent work experience.
